Luca School of Arts Leuven/Jazz department celebrates its 30th anniversary
Previously known as the Lemmens Institute, the Jazz & Light Music Department of the Luca Arts School of Arts in Leuven celebrates its 30th anniversary, a.o. with concerts featuring teachers and alumni.

Toots Thielemans, besides an impressive career as a jazz musician, also added his harmonica to numerous movies, by Verhoeven, Peckinpah, Berri, Yves Robert, Schlesinger, Lautner, Spielberg, de Hert... on scores by Quincy Jones, Philippe Sarde, John Williams, John Barry, Vladimir Cosma etc...
Movies from Belgium, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, the US, etc...
A retrospective is taking place at the Cinematic in Brussels, starting April 2, 2017.

L'Ame des Poètes in Vietnam
L'Ame des Poètes, a trio which revisits French "chansons" with an instrumental and jazzy approach is to perform in Vietnam. Concerts are planned in Hanoi and Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville, with a local traditional musician as a guest.
L'Ame des Poètes is composed of Pierre Vaiana (sop sax), Fabien Degryse (gt) and Jean-Louis Rassinfosse (double bass).

B-Jazz International Contest 2017 in Leuven, with an exhibition of photos by Jos L. Knaepen
From March 24 through 26, 2017, the finals of the B-Jazz International Contest 2017 will take place in Leuven, in the Opek hall. On March 26, the JazzMozaïek Award 2017 will be handed to bassist Nicolas Thys in 30CC/Schouwburg (from 16:00) and the winners of the contest will be announced.
Between concerts at Opek, you can take a look at a jazz photo exhibition by the late Jos L. Knaepen.
The winner of the ‘Grand Prize Albert Michiels‘ gets the chance to play concerts at Getxo Jazz Festival 2017 (Spain), at Saint Louis College of Music (Rome, Italy), at Amersfoort Jazz Festival (Netherlands) and on the Druivenfestival (Hoeilaart, Belgium).
In addition there is a prize for best bassplayer and a prize for the best performance of the mandatory composition (= winning composition of the B-Jazz Composition Contest 2017), supported by Sabam.

Bassist Nicolas Thys has received the Jazzmozaïek Award 2017.
He plays acoustic and electric bass with numerous bands, a.o. Nathalie Loriers Trio, Kris Defoort Trio, Tutu Puoane, as well as his own projects.

    News from the Brussels Jazz Orchestra : the Brel programme (feat. David Linx) tours in Wallonia in Huy, Soignies, Louvain-la-Neuve and Dinant, in the Netherlands (Breda), or afterwards in France (Bourges). The project was featured in 22 concert dates so far.
    Other projects in the coming weeks :

    Saxophonist Toine Thys will tour with his trio and guitarist Hervé Samb in Belgium and the Netherlands.
    On March 25, 2017, he will be at the Maison de la radio in Paris for a live recording of the Bounce Trio for Radio France. With Gautier Garrigue, Matthieu Marthouret and Serge Lazarevich.
    End of March, with trumpet player Laurent Blondiau, he will teach at the Ecole de Ventistes in Burkina Faso.

    Clarinetist Jean-François Foliez presents on March 4 in Liege (Theater) the second edition of Creative Playground, a multidiscipline event.
    With the Quartet JF FOLIEZ’S PLAYGROUND, a string quartet and soloists such as violinist Roby Lakatos, vibraphonist Martin Méreau, pianist Johan Dupont and guitarist Manu Baily, each of whom also will write a special piece for the occasion.
    For visual arts : Jacques Charlier, Stefan Liberski and Camera Etc for a live creation.

    Rainbow Shadow - A Tribute to Jef Lee Johnson will be on tour from 26 February to 16 March 2017 and will record a new CD at the same occasion (Volume 2 !) that will be released in FALL 2017 on Jammin'colorS label.
    This band celebrates the music and amazing work of the late guitarist Jef Lee Johnson.
